In 2021 Jonathan Simkhai marked 10 years in business and deservedly took a nostalgic look back over his accomplishments. His confident pre-fall collection shows that he’s not lingering in the past, but moving forward by placing even more emphasis on handcraft. Yes, the lineup includes some of the brand’s signatures—flowing plissé dresses, cut-outs, space-dyed knits—but the intricate way decorative stones were worked into airy hand crochets and suspension dresses took Simkhai’s experimentation with “hardware” in a new direction, one that’s intentionally more organic.
“I wanted to use fibers, fabrics, and materials that felt like they came from the earth,” said Simkhai, who also made use of “hyper tech yarns,” explaining that he thrives on dichotomies. His oppositions are gentle ones; customers have come to count on the consistency of the brand vision.
