Chelsea v Manchester United: Match in Pictures

Thomas Tuchel revealed Jorginho was blinded by the floodlights after the midfielder’s costly mistake cost Chelsea two points in the title race.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho made amends with the equalising penalty but it was his mistake with a poor piece of control which let in Jadon Sancho to put Manchester United ahead.

Blues boss Tuchel said: “He misjudged the situation and I think he was heavily disturbed from the lights. It happens.

“It takes a lot of courage and personality to not be affected during the match and to have the courage to take the penalty. I am very happy that he did it.”

Tuchel insisted that his team deserved to win and saw Antonio Rudiger miss a glorious chance to win it in the 97th minute but they have allowed Manchester City and Liverpool to close the gap in the title race.

“I am absolutely happy with the performance. We dominated from the first minute, we were aggressive and never stopped attacking. Unfortunately we scored two goals, one for each side,” said Tuchel.

“It was a big chance for Toni, if he maybe hits the target it could have been a fantastic end to a fantastic performance but we have to swallow the result. We played very well and I am happy.”

But Tuchel was booked late on after a furious rant at the officials for allowing play to continue even though Cristiano Ronaldo was clearly offside on a breakaway but the linesman did not put his flag up because of VAR rules.

Tuchel said: “It was very frustrating because I get seen as the bad guy but everyone could see it was offside. You can lose games like that.”

United, meanwhile, remain 12 points behind Chelsea and have now won just one of their last eight Premier League outings.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick, who is expected to step aside following the arrival of interim boss Ralf Rangnick, admitted he was frustrated with the result.

“Slightly disappointed to be honest,” he said. “We went ahead. We came here to win the game. To go 1-0 up and have it taken away from you is disappointing.

“That intent and that hunger summed us up today. We knew it wasn’t going to be free flowing football at times but we were prepared to dig in.

“It probably looks easier when you go two against a keeper but it is a little cat and mouse. He [Jadon Sancho] managed to score and I am pleased for him.

“It has been a decent couple of games. It is mixed feelings because I shouldn’t be here if things had gone as we wanted. I felt like we lost out on it today because two wins would have been better.”

On whether Rangnick selected the team, Carrick insisted: “It is not the case, no.”
