Johnny Nelson claims that Anthony Joshua needs to give the reins to his new trainer if he hopes to regain his world titles. The former boxer-turned-pundit believes AJ has to find himself a trainer that can bring out the best in him as Sir Alex Ferguson did for David Beckham during his time at Manchester United.
Joshua recently split with legendary coach Robert Garcia following his second loss to Oleksandr Usyk. He is currently on the lookout for his third trainer in three fights having axed long-time mentor Rob McCracken after his inaugural encounter with the Ukrainian.
AJ is currently touring America in search of a new lead and has visited Derrick James and Virgil Hunter so far, with a final decision expected over the coming weeks. From Nelson’s perspective, the decision is make or break for Joshua’s career.
“He needs to get in the gym and be told ‘Yo, you’re doing this today’,” he told iFL TV. “You can’t be bus driver, ticket collector and passenger and be able to do a good job. He needs direction, he needs someone to tell him what to do, not ask, not for him to negotiate – ‘this is what we are doing today’.
Joshua is expected to return to the ring in March or April at the O2 Arena against a currently undisclosed opponent. Dillian Whyte is understood to be the frontrunner after his win over Jermaine Franklin last month with Otto Wallin also in contention.
Meanwhile, Zhang Zhilei, Filip Hrgovic, and Demsey McKean have all been mentioned in the same discussion by promoter Eddie Hearn.
