Anthony Joshua has been told he must “take responsibility” for his losses before he can begin rebuilding his career. Boxing legend Barry McGuigan believes Joshua is placing the blame onto his former trainer Robert Garcia rather than accepting his own part in his recent shortcomings.
Joshua has lost three of his last five fights including consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in his most recent outings. AJ parted ways with long-time mentor Rob McCracken after the first defeat to Usyk and replaced him with Garcia.
Under Garcia, Joshua showed marked improvements in the second encounter, losing by far narrower margins. However, despite showing advancements in his game, Joshua has terminated his relationship with the legendary coach after just four months of working together.
McGuigan sees Joshua in a state of crisis and says that he has to rebuild mentally before he returns to the ring in early 2023.
“He has got to be better at coming forward and he’s got to be more confident to stand in punching range and move his head and not always bounce back out again but that takes time to learn. But really, it’s a waste of time talking about it. He needs to settle down with someone and get on with it.”
Joshua is currently in America sampling new trainers for his comeback, which is expected to take place at the O2 Arena in March or April next year. So far, he has visited Derrick James and Virgil Hunter, with a final decision likely to be made in the coming weeks.
