Wednesday saw a judge rule that Ja Morant’s legal team can proceed with their argument that the Memphis Grizzlies star was acting in self-defense when he punched a teen last summer during a pick-up game at his home.
According to reports, Morant’s lawyers have acknowledged that he hit the 17-year-old after he threw a basketball at Morant that struck him in the chin.
Morant and his friend were accused in a lawsuit of assault, reckless endangerment, abuse or neglect, and infliction of emotional distress.
The future of a lawsuit accusing Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant of assaulting a teenager during a pickup basketball game hinges on whether Morant will be allowed to say that he was acting in self defense and can receive immunity under Tennessee law. https://t.co/QYgU6pQH71

No criminal charges have been filed against Morant. But the All-NBA guard’s attorneys argue that he should be immune from liability under Tennessee’s “stand your ground” law, which allows people who feel threatened at their homes to act with force in certain situations.
Morant also filed a countersuit alleging the teen of slander, battery and assault.
The respective lawsuits have led to a number complicated legal arguments surrounding “stand your ground,” but Circuit Court Judge Carol Chumney is willing to hear from lawyers whether or not it’s applicable in this case.
Morant has been suspended 25 games for the upcoming season in an unrelated gun-waving incident.
