The German is believed to be Chelsea’s first choice to replace Potter, who was sacked on Sunday following a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa.
Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich in late March and replaced by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.
Nevertheless, the German is still considered to be one of the best young managers in the world and Chelsea are aware that there’s interest in him from rivals Tottenham.
Chelsea’s chaotic season – which has included two sackings and £600m worth of spending – has left some managerial targets questioning a move to Stamford Bridge.
Nagelsmann is understandably apprehensive after lasting just 18 months in Bavaria but Fabrizio Romano says he’s ‘open’ to talking to the Blues.
The German wants clarification from Chelsea that he would be embarking on a ‘long-term’ project and would need time to implement his ideas at the club.
Chelsea plan on speaking to a number of candidates, with Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino also on their shortlist.
The Blues take on Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and, with a top-four finish out of reach, Chelsea must win the competition in order to enter it next season.
