Julian Sands’ cause of death reaches inconclusive final verdict

Julian Sands’ cause of death reaches inconclusive final verdict

Julian Sands’ cause of death has been deemed “undetermined” by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

A public information officer for the county confirmed the final verdict to PEOPLE on Monday.

They confirmed the cause of death was “undetermined due to the condition of the body and this is common when dealing with cases of this type.”

The 65-year-old British actor went missing around Mount Baldy in San Bernardino County, California for more than five months.

Human remains were identified by recreational hikers in June and authorities identified them as Sands’ on June 27.

Sands’ brother Nick was devastated by the incident and released a heartfelt statement shortly after his disappearance in January.

“He has not yet been declared missing, presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone,” he said.

“Julian liked to say, ‘I have never had a holiday but I do rest occasionally’ – well he’s resting now in a place he would truly approve of.

“However sibling rivalry being what it is, it would be just like him to walk out of there and prove me wrong.”

His manager Sarah Jackson recently told PEOPLE: “Julian was a great friend and client. He chose interesting projects that mattered to him and was adored by everyone who worked with him.

“He was a passionate climber, and we draw consultation from knowing that he passed in a place he loved, doing what he loved. We are filled with the most beautiful memories.”

The British actor was best known for his roles in Arachnophobia and Room with a View.

Sands was also a passionate hiker and opened up about his hobby in a 2020 interview with The Guardian.

“I owe [my parents] for encouraging me to take an interest in the arts (my mother, who did secretarial work at a garage) and natural history (my father, who did agricultural soil surveys),” he said.

He also said he’s happiest “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning”.

Sands is survived by his wife Evgenia Citkowitz and their two daughters, Natalya and Imogen.
