Julianna Pena shocks the world, chokes out Amanda Nunes at UFC 269.
Julianna Pena was one of the few bantamweight contenders who openly admitted she wasn’t scared of Amanda Nunes, and she backed it up with an incredible upset win at UFC 269.
Nunes had her way in the opening minutes of the fight, dropping Pena with a massive right hand that had her in early trouble. But, Pena was able to survive the early barrage and get the fight to the ground, where both women found success with ground-and-pound strikes.
Round 2 consisted of a stunning standup back-and-forth between Pena and Nunes, and Nunes’ trademark smirk quickly turned to a look of concern as Pena found a constant home on Nunes’ chin. Pena’s jab in particular gave Nunes issues and quickly drained the reigning champion.
After wobbling Nunes on the feet, Pena secured a heavy takedown and quickly got Nunes’ back, securing a rear-naked choke for the bantamweight title.
Julianna Pena pulled off one of the greatest upsets in UFC history
Nunes came into UFC 269 having been unchallenged by most contenders since earning the bantamweight and featherweight titles. She put her bantamweight title on the line for the first time in two years against Pena after many wondered what her future at 135 pounds would look like.
Nunes originally earned the title by submitting Miesha Tate at UFC 200. She would then go on to put on legendary performances against the likes of Ronda Rousey, Germaine de Randamie, and Holly Holm after earning the bantamweight title.
Pena, one of the few remaining bantamweight contenders that Nunes hasn’t fought and beat already, came into the fight with plenty of momentum after defeating Sara McMann earlier this year. She has called for a fight with Nunes for years, but the fight never materialized until now.
Nunes and Pena were supposed to fight earlier this year before Nunes was diagnosed with COVID-19.
The UFC could book an immediate rematch between Pena and Nunes. But for now, a new bantamweight queen is on the throne.
UFC 269 took place on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Follow along with FanSided MMA, who is on-site, for all your news and highlights.
