Julie de Libran cast some of her closest friends’ daughters and a set of young models for her haute couture défilé, held as usual in the lush garden of her Paris apartment. Showing expensive couture dresses on lovely jeune filles en fleur was her way of celebrating the coming of age of a new generation of girls, who are becoming aware of their bodies and their power of seduction. “It’s nice to make them appreciate the artistry that goes into one of a kind creations,” she said. As the saying goes, start them young.
“These girls dress with natural ease, they mix everyday clothes with eveningwear, they love to play with la mode, ” said de Libran backstage, pointing out a pair of yoga leggings worn under a poufy silk taffeta gown, and an hourglassy black blazer contrasting with a sequined trailing skirt. On the same note, an immaculate men’s white shirt with jewel buttons looked fresh donned with a pair of sparkling black shorts, while a navy blue tuxedo thrown over a masculine boxers/tank top combination made the case for the very French notion of nonchalance.
The collection conveyed a festive, dressed up feel. What looked constructed was actually featherlight, like a rhinestone corset that was deceptively made of an impalpable net; a sensuous gold column dress with the hem turning into a cape had impact. “My débutantes may be young, but they’re not beginners,” de Libran said. They surely didn’t look in need of much schooling.
