Root accepts England need wholesale changes after Ashes defeat

England head coach Chris Silverwood is under pressure following his side’s 4-0 defeat to Australia in the Ashes and a decision on his future is said to be imminent.

Managing Director Ashley Giles has been tasked with putting together a report examining England’s defeat and Sir Andrew Strauss, the chair of the ECB’s cricket committee, will review the report and then make any recommendations to the board.

That includes a decision over the future of Silverwood, with several potential replacements already mooted.

Gary Kirsten has publicly spoken of his desire to replace Silverwood, while the likes of Nasser Hussain and David Lloyd have tipped Ricky Ponting to take over.

Current Australia coach Justin Langer has also been mentioned as a possible option, with the 51-year-old widely expected to leave his current role when his contract expires later this year.

Although Australia have won both the T20 World Cup and the Ashes under Langer’s stewardship, Cricket Australia are not expected to renew his contract, with former England coach Trevor Bayliss lined up as a potential replacement.

Despite getting linked with the England job, the Mail are reporting that it is unlikely Langer would replace Silverwood.

The report states he would ‘find it difficult to cross the Ashes divide’ and is more likely to take a coaching role in county cricket instead.

With just over five weeks before the start of their next Test series against the West Indies, England could appoint an interim coach while they search for a replacement for Silverwood.

The report claims that Surrey’s director of cricket Alec Stewart is a potential interim option, having previously been shortlisted as a contender to replace Trevor Bayliss back in 2019.

Stewart was invited to an interview but he ultimately pulled out of the running, reportedly due to family reasons and England’s busy touring schedule.
