With Njabulo Blom having departed the MLS, Chiefs have missed his box-to-box dynamism. Andile Jali is one of the finest midfield generals in PSL history but, at 33, time is no longer his friend. Stellies midfielder Ibraheem Jabaar is a totally different profile of footballer, but he’d be able to put his own spin on that box-to-box role. He is primarily a ball-winner, but is more than capable of crisply and quickly recycling the ball.

Chiefs need a player like Jabaar. They don’t need a player like Jali, not right now at least. The choice seems to be obvious. They MUST secure arguably the best young midfielder in the PSL because that would be a clear statement of intent ahead of 2023-24. With the experience of Sifiso Hlanti and Itu Khune in other parts of the pitch, Jali isn’t and shouldn’t be a pressing priority.
