True crimes have taken over television and streaming, with various series based on true stories becoming the most watched on different networks and platforms. Seizing the moment, Peacock shared the first trailer for Based on a True Story, its new series that satirizes the genre.
Just as productions like Scream did, and continue to do with horror movies, the new original series on the NBC Universal platform seeks to expose the public’s obsession with this type of stories, which has led to overwhelming successes like The Staircase, The Girl from Plainville, The Act or Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which has already announced the first details of its second season.
Earlier this month, Peacock shared the first-look images at the show starring Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory), Chris Messina (Air), Tom Bateman (Death on the Nile), Priscilla Quintana (Good Trouble), Liana Liberato (Scream 6), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Alex Alomar Akpobome (Industry), Aisha Alfa (Sorry for Your Loss), Annabelle Dexter-Jones (Swing Low), and Li Jun Li (Babylon).
Now that the release of the show is getting closer, the streaming platform unveils the first trailer, which focuses on Cuoco’s obsession with true crime:
Following a similar path as Hulu’s hit comedy Only Murders in the Building, the Peacock series will show how the obsession with murderers and their lives ends up transforming the reality of a couple, who fills a void through these criminal acts in which they suddenly find themselves involved in.
Seeking fame, the protagonists will allow themselves to be dragged through this universe of mysteries, dark people and clues, without realizing the danger behind getting so involved in a matter that they only understood through fictional stories.
Created by Craig Rosenberg (The Boys), Jason Bateman (Ozark), and Michael Costigan (Under the Banner of Heaven), the series follows a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who will try to find a way to take advantage of true crime’s popularity, while two of them try to save their marriage.
Based on a True Story premieres on Peacock on June 8. The series will have eight episodes and all will be released on the same day.
Kaley Cuoco’s Road From The Big Bang Theory to Based on a True Story
It’s been three years since The Big Bang Theory ended, and Kaley Cuoco surely made her way into the industry after her big break in the popular sitcom. Even when the actress already had a long career before landing the role of Penny, there’s no doubt this character was the last push she needed to success.
Right before finishing the show, Cuoco was cast as the main voice star in Harley Quinn’s animated series, which she’s still part of. But it was still comedy, and she needed to get some distance from the genre in order to keep growing. And that’s when The Flight Attendant came in.
The HBO Max original series is still a comedy, but much darker and with many dramatic elements that put the actress up for a very difficult challenge. And she managed not only to overcome it, but her acting earned her an Emmy nomination last year.
The show follows flight attendant’s Cassie Bowden, who finds herself suddenly involved in a crime after a one-night stand in Dubai. The second season finds her working as a CIA undercover agent, which ends up with her involved in another unexpected crime. For now, there are no news about the continuation of the series.
She’s also set to star in upcoming thriller Role Play, directed by Thomas Vincent and written by Seth Owen. The story follows a married couple that goes through a hard time when secrets from their past start to emerge.
