An annual American event showcasing the best of Scottish heritage and culture will culminate in a parade in New York City on Saturday led by actress Karen Gillan.

Tartan Week is returning after a two-year hiatus due to Covid restrictions.

It comes as new figures reveal that Scottish exports to the United States provide an estimated value of £6bn towards the country’s economy.

This year’s celebration has seen a variety of Scottish-themed events held across New York in the build-up to Saturday’s parade, such as the Tartan Day Takeaway event hosted by Scottish chef Tony Singh.

The pop-up food truck, which was set up in Madison Square Park, saw New Yorkers treated to live music and dishes such as Punjabi salmon tacos and kheer with Islay whisky and sweet mango – washed down with Irn Bru.

Vicki Miller, VisitScotland director of marketing & digital, said: “After a two-year break, VisitScotland is thrilled to be back in North America and part of Tartan Week.

“North America is Scotland’s largest international market, and the return of these visitors is vital for the long-term recovery of our valuable tourism and events industry.

“Tartan Week, and creative events such as the Tartan Day Takeaway, are a key part of our work to keep Scotland top of mind and rebuild international demand.”

Justine Kelly, senior vice-president, at Scottish Development International (SDI), said: “Tartan Week is an excellent opportunity for SDI colleagues across North America to highlight the very best Scotland has to offer.

“While the past couple of years have been difficult for exporters, Scotland’s reputation for quality in the United States has not diminished.”
