Kate Bush first hit the big time 45 years ago when she topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut single Wuthering Heights, making her the first female artist to do so with a self-written track. And now the 64-year-old, who was appointed a CBE in 2013 by the late Queen, has been honoured by having one of her biggest hits selected for King Charles III’s official Coronation Celebration Playlist on Spotify.

Last year Running Up That Hill topped the charts in eight countries, including the UK for three consecutive weeks, Ireland for seven and Australia for nine non-consecutive. It also hit a new peak of No 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.

Bush wrote the single in just one evening at home and said the lyrics spoke of the inability of men and women to understand each other. The track explores the idea of the sexes making “a deal with God” to exchange places and understand each other better. In fact, A Deal with God was the original song title but EMI Records worried it would make the track unpopular in more religious countries.
