Kate Garraway has spoken frankly of her fears for her husband Derek Draper.
The Good Morning Britain star’s 56-year-old husband Derek still requires full-time care due to suffering serious complications after contracting Covid-19 in 2020.
Earlier this month, Kate, also 56, revealed Derek, with whom she shares two children, recently developed a terrifying new condition that sees him choke and ‘turn blue’.
In a new interview, the TV star said because of her husband being ‘rushed back to hospital so many times’ she and her family have been unable to shake the fear of him dying.
‘I’d love to be able to tell you that, since Derek has been home, everything has been easy, that the miracle of him being at home has turned the day-to-day challenges into a breeze,’ Kate shared.
‘But because we keep having emergency setbacks and he’s had to be rushed back into hospital so many times, the fear of him dying has never left us,’ she added to Good Housekeeping.
‘The unpredictability of his day-to-day condition means we’re living on a rollercoaster.’
Doting mum Kate also told the outlet that she’s been ‘experimenting with ways to take control of my own happiness’ and now makes sure to ‘carve out’ time for herself.
She also confirmed there’s a ‘fun girls’ night in the diary’ with Charlotte Hawkins, Ranvir Singh and Susanna Reid.
Earlier in September, Kate revealed that a carer arrives at 8am every morning to look after Derek.
Speaking to The Times, she explained they do a 12-hour shift before being replaced by a second carer who stays up with Derek until 8am the next morning.
She then detailed Derek’s choking condition, noting that the dad-of-two ‘can neither breathe in oxygen nor expel carbon dioxide efficiently’.
‘[It’s] slightly poisoning his body all the time,’ Kate shared. ‘He urgently needs respiratory rehab.’
The veteran presenter then spoke about the ‘weird choking condition’ Derek has developed.
‘It happened again just last weekend. For absolutely no reason he just went blue.’
Kate watched ‘terrified’ with her son as Derek’s carers rushed to save him.
Describing how she felt in the moment, Kate said: ‘Just oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.’
Derek ‘sort of vomited’ and the carers then ‘high-fived Top Gun-style’.
‘They knew they’d had a really near miss,’ Kate said.
Kate regularly speaks on life as a carer for her husband and how he is progressing health-wise and has released two documentaries on the subject: Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.
