It is clear which clothes Kate prefers as they appear again and again when she is photographd in public. But there is one item that stands out above the rest, transending time and style: the coat dress.
Although Kate’s sense of style has changed over the years, just like her hairstyle and make-up look, some clothing staples have stayed the same.
Celebrity stylist and fashion expert Miranda Holder spoke to Express.co.uk about why the coat dress has been a big part of Kate’s wardrobe since she was first thrown into the limelight.
She said: “Kate’s style may have transformed over the years as she has seemingly effortlessly transitioned from an university student and girlfriend of Prince William to a sophisticated future Queen Consort.
“But one style point which has remained constant is her love of coat dresses.

Miranda continued: “More often than not, Kate steps out looking elegant and regal in a coat dress, which has become part of her signature look for several reasons.
“The first reason is a practical one and due to the complexities of royal etiquette – it is deemed inappropriate for a royal woman to be seen removing her coat in public, which is why the coat dress has become such a staple in many royal women’s wardrobes.”
The fashion expert explained that “Camilla the Queen Consort, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Sophie Countess of Wessex are all big devotees of the style, not least because of this very practical reason”.
However, for Kate, her love of a good coat dress goes beyond royal protocol.

Miranda said: “Another factor in Kate’s love for this garment lies in her personal brand, which has become increasingly established over the years and her personal style contributes to.
“Much like when we picture the late Queen, we always imagine her in one of her colourful monochromatic ensembles with matching hat, handbag and brolly.
“When we picture Kate Middleton, the odds are that you will imagine her in one of her many coat dresses.
“They have become iconic – a style uniform that is part of her sartorial signature, and as they are working so well there is no need to look to any alternatives.

“Modesty is always a consideration for a Windsor wife. Hemlines and necklines are said to be routinely checked to ensure they aren’t too daring, and the coat dress is a classic silhouette which strikes all the demure style points whilst still being chic.”
But the coat dress isn’t only stylish – it suits Kate’s figure too.
Miranda added: “Finally, Kate understands how to dress her body shape and the coat dresses she wears, with their nipped in waist and flared skirt, perfectly complement her figure.
“Her wardrobe may appear effortless, but don’t underestimate the meticulous planning, research and preparation that goes into every outfit.”
It is impossible to shortlist Kate’s best coat dresses – all of them are unqiue and eye-catching in their own way.
However, some deserve special mention. The Princess’ 1960s-style houndstooth Catherine Walker coat dress was a self-assured and stylish choice to visit Sweden’s National Association for Suicide Research and Prevention of Mental Health in 2018.
In 2016, for the 75th anniversary of the RAF Cadets, a sky-blue Alexander McQueen coat dress worked brilliantly – complete with an Air Cadets Dacre brooch pinned onto its lapel.
More recently, Kate donned a Dolce & Gabbanna black coat dress with large, gold buttons for her first appearance since the Queen’s state funeral on September 19. The garment was understated due to the fact the royals were still in a period of mourning, but its buttons made it stand out and gave it a modern, art-deco twist.
