A big-budget thriller series starring one of the Duchess of Sussex’s close friends contains a crude sexual insult about the Princess of Wales.
Citadel, which is being screened on streaming giant Amazon Prime, stars Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who has repeatedly backed Meghan Markle publicly.
Ms Chopra Jonas, 40, plays the leading role of elite espionage agent Nadia Sinh in the six-part spy action series.
In the third episode, she is in a scene where a crime boss named Balduino Basto, played by Sen Monro, is asked to break into the office of the Armed Forces chief.
He replies: “The Chief of Armed Forces? You might as well have asked me how to get between the legs of the Duchess of Cambridge!”
The revelation about Citadel’s scene comes after it was claimed that the new live-action remake of Disney movie The Little Mermaid – one of the Duchess of Sussex’s favourites – also contains a dig at her sister-in-law.
Ms Chopra Jonas and the Duchess of Sussex, 41, became friends when they met at an Elle magazine event in 2016.
Soon afterwards, Meghan interviewed Ms Chopra Jonas for her blog, The Tig, which no longer exists.
They were also seen at the theatre together on New York’s Broadway where they were watching Hamilton.
Ms Chopra Jonas wrote an open letter about her friend before the Royal wedding in 2018, around the time Meghan made it on to Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list.
She said: “More than anything else, Meghan is an important influencer in a world that needs strong public figures to respect and look up to… Meghan, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Harry, will be a Princess for the people.”
She also staunchly defended the Duchess in an interview with The Sunday Times a year later, where she said the press criticism Meghan had received “has to do with racism”.
Citadel is one of the most expensive television shows ever made, with a production budget of almost £300 million, and also stars Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci.
It premiered on April 28 and a second season has been commissioned.
Amazon Prime did not respond to a request for comment last night.
Last week, a critic who went to see an early screening of live-action film The Little Mermaid noted an apparent insult about the Princess of Wales in a scene where Prince Eric tries to guess mermaid Ariel’s name.
The critic said: “His first guess is Diana and his second guess is Catherine. But after (Ariel gives a disgusted) reaction, he (concludes), ‘OK, definitely not Catherine.’ Disney would be disingenuous to imply those name choices were coincidental.”
