Kate’s Trooping the Colour dress will ‘reflect the significance of her new role’

Kate, Princess of Wales will join other working members of the Royal Family at Trooping the Colour this weekend.

The ceremony has marked the birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years, though Kate made her debut in the parade just 12 years ago, shortly after she married Prince William.

Having debuted nine outfits for each ceremony between 2011 and 2022, the 41-year-old’s look this year is expected to be a little different.

While there is no doubt that she will step out in a designer ensemble with not one hair out of place, royal experts claim that her choice of colour will be telling of her senior position in the Royal Family.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, royal historian and commentator Mok O’Keeffe (@gayaristo) claimed that green or blue are likely contenders for the colour of Kate’s dress.

Mok said: “The Princess of Wales is very used to attending Trooping the Colour – but this year will be particularly important and special.

“It is the first one where her father-in-law is King and the first one where she will be attending as Colonel of the Irish Guards.

“In the past, this role was held by her husband, Prince William, who attended the event in military uniform.

“The Princess of Wales is unlikely to wear a uniform, never having served, but her wardrobe will reflect the significance of her new role.”

Staying true to her signature style, Kate is expected to wear a modest dress to the event – in none other than a bright colour to suit her complexion. And according to the royal historian, there are two colours likely to be top contenders.

Mok claimed: “She has previously worn green when visiting the guards and this may be a suitable choice. She is also favouring a lot of blue recently, however, in this heat, she may opt for a lighter colour.

“You can be sure that it will not be a colour that pops – such as yellow or pink – as she will not want to take the spotlight away from her husband or her mother-in-law Queen Camilla.”

Last year Princess Kate opted for an elegant white dress by Alexander McQueen. She paired the tailored design with a white and navy hat by Philip Treacy – a designer loved by royal women across the globe.

Though it was a special occasion, the Princess of Wales did not debut a new dress and instead, restyled the white number which she first wore in June 2021 at a reception in Cornwall.

The royal was sure to choose her jewels wisely for the event and last year paid tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, by wearing a sapphire and diamond necklace with a pair of matching drop earrings.

Aside from looking the part with her white and blue ensemble, the jewellery once belonged to the former Princess of Wales.

Last year wasn’t the first time Kate wore white for the official birthday of the sovereign. In 2011, just months after she married Prince William, the then 29-year-old donned a similar outfit for her first-ever Trooping the Colour.

The coat-style dress was made from a textured, off-white fabric which was used to make the form-fitting jacket top and a full, ruffled skirt.

On other occasions, the royal has opted for pastel hues – namely yellow and pink. When Kate wore pink in 2017, and yellow in 2019, the 41-year-old followed her signature style formula by matching her dress with her hat to create a tonal outfit.

Each time, the dresses worn by Kate for Trooping the Colour have been knee-length, tailored styles with modest necklines.

Long sleeves, a cinched-in waist and an a-line skirt were all staple features seen in Kate’s previous outfits.

Having worn Alexander McQueen for her very first role in the ceremony and for years after that, it is likely that the Princess of Wales will opt for another gown by the famed designer, who is her “go-to” for such events.
