Katie Holmes’s stylist explained how that dress-over-jeans look came to be

When Katie Holmes wore the below outfit to this year’s Jingle Ball in New York.

The internet lovingly roasted her for it, bracing itself for the return of the worst Y2K trends. But Holmes’s stylist, Brie Welch, is not here for the dress-over-jeans slander.

To refresh your memory, here is the outfit in question: a strapless Tove top, Reformation jeans and Margiela sneakers.

Now, I as much as anyone miss the days when the red carpet for B-tier events was a place to try new things and have fun. Seems like today it’s just cocktail dresses and bodysuits, bodysuits and cocktail dresses. We have to at least applaud the effort!

The woman behind the look, Welch, just gave an interview to The New York Times and said via email, “We decided the rich colour and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans, creating a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there.”

She added, “On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!).” Makes sense!

Despite the fact that Holmes’s top is technically a top (a Going Out Top, if you will), the Times attributes this look to a resurrection of the dress-over-jeans days of yore.

Katie Holmes should absolutely be as youthful and fun as she wants to be at events, and for that may I suggest crop tops, distressed denim, a halter top, platform sneakers, and basically everything everyone wore (yes, including Portia) on The White Lotus: Sicily.
