Katie Taylor was all class in defeat to Chantelle Cameron in Dublin on Saturday night, congratulating her opponent and already looking forward to their rematch later in the year.
Both fighters came in undefeated as professionals, with Cameron putting her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring female light-welterweight titles on the line as Taylor looked to step up a division and become undisputed world champion in two weights.
It was a close fight between the two world class operators and Cameron took it, with two judges giving her the bout 96-94 and the third scoring it a draw, so the Englishwoman picked up a huge majority decision win.
Asked if she felt she had done enough to win, the Irish icon told DAZN: ‘I’m not sure to be honest, I’ll have to look back at the fight.
‘Congratulations to Chantelle and thank you for this opportunity. I’m looking forward to the rematch.
‘I wasn’t surprised how fast she was. I expected everything that came my way but I just came up short tonight. I look forward to next time facing her.
‘I knew it was a close fight, every round was close but this is boxing.’
Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that they will target an autumn rematch, but Cameron declared that she intends to go down in weight to challenge for the lightweight belts rather than defend her own titles.
‘It was a close fight and Katie is a great boxer, pound-for-pound the best,’ she said. ‘My strength is putting the pressure on. I don’t mind getting hit so my corner let me off the leash.
‘I beat (Jessica) McCaskill at 147 last fight and now I’ve just beat another undisputed champion. I’m sick of keeping my belts, I want to go for more belts.’
Hearn added: ‘I want to congratulate Katie and Chantelle for showing us what boxing is all about. It was a fight that could have gone either way but I think the result was right.
‘There is a rematch clause and we want to do it again in the autumn. There’s only one thing on Katie’s mind and that is a rematch.’
