Roy Keane says Manchester United should build their team around Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Raphael Varane.

The Red Devils legend had backed the idea of a rebuild at Old Trafford following United’s 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Despite Ralf Rangnick ‘s squad containing £877million worth of talent, Keane would use just three as the foundation to bring the glory days back to the club.

Asked on Sky Sports who of the Red Devils’ current team he would keep, the Irishman replied: “I don’t know, I really don’t.

“Bruno sure, people like Ronaldo, Varane, there are some good young players there.”

Keane continued: “If a top coach comes in – at least for a good starting point – there are senior players there, at least their contracts are nearly up you can move them on, get some fresh young talent in at United.”

The men in question are likely to be Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, whose respective deals all expire at the end of the season.

One of the players picked out by the ex-United captain, Fernandes, scored both of his side’s goals at Villa Park before they squandered a two-goal lead to Steven Gerrard ‘s men.

The Portuguese’s second was an emphatic finish which Keane enjoyed greatly.

“He’s got brilliant quality and we’ve seen that. He’s been short of scoring goals lately,” the legendary midfielder explained.

“Even this finish – okay, you can criticise Aston Villa of overplaying it with the poor pass, not recovering well from the pass – it’s just his first touch that sets him up.

“Poor play for Villa there b ut take nothing away from the strike, it’s a lovely finish. It’s the first touch he takes, it just sets it up for him.”

However, Keane was critical of how Rangnick’s team played as a whole, despite a ‘really good’ first-half performance.

Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho scored a late equaliser after teenage sensation Jacob Ramsey pulled one back five minutes earlier, snatching a point for Gerrard and co.

“United get 2-0 in front and you’re thinking it’s game over,” he admitted.

“Then again you saw, I suppose, the weaknesses in United. In particular in midfield. Then they gave away a couple of goals, which will be disappointing.

“But overall you couldn’t be grudged for Villa to draw. They showed a lot of bravery in the second-half. Again when you open up against United, you’re thinking they can rip you apart. But, United didn’t quite run at it in terms of the counter-attack.

“I thought [Edinson] Cavani was poor. I was surprised [Rangnick] left him on for the full game. Just about a fair result.”
