A new ad for the Japanese whisky Suntory has been released in honor of its 100th anniversary celebration. Directed by Sofia Coppola, the ad features John Wick actor Keanu Reeves. The ad shows Reeves walking into a bar and getting a drink of some Suntory whisky with a group of pals, clearly have a good time. With music playing, a barrage of video clips follows, blending old advertisements for the brand and even a clip of a younger Reeves. Running at around a minute an forty five seconds, the ad is a sight to behold, and you can watch it for yourself below.
“The Suntory Whisky Anniversary Tribute tells the remarkable story of the brand’s heritage and whisky-making legacy over the last 100 years, depicting the meaning of ‘Suntory Time’ through the eyes of its creator,” a description of the video reads. “More than an iconic line in a brilliant film, ‘Suntory Time’ continues to evolve and gain recognition in Japanese whisky culture. Twenty years after the release of Lost in Translation, it is still embraced and echoed across the globe in connection with our world-renowned spirits. It all started with a glass of Hibiki, but today there is a ‘Suntory Time’ for every individual, every occasion, and every friend we meet along the way.”
Lost in Translation, released in 2003, was directed by Coppola. The film was set in Tokyo and included the actual line, “For relaxing times, make it Suntory Time.” The footage in the video of a younger Reeves even comes from an ad for Suntory the actor appeared in back in the 1990s. Speaking with People, Reeves said he was happy to take part when he was asked to be a part of Coppola’s new tribute ad for Suntory.
“It was cool [to get] a chance to work with Sofia Coppola and to work with [her brother] Roman Coppola on a kind of short commercial and then a docu-series. It was a really special opportunity,” Reeves said.
Keanu Reeves Went to Japan to Film the New Video
Reeves also addressed heading to Japan to work on the ad and how much of a great time he had with his visit. Along with working on the video, he spent some additional time meeting with many people in the area and soaking in as much information as he could about their culture.
“It was wonderful, really wonderful… it was extraordinary to have the opportunity to spend time with people from Suntory, in terms of going to the founding distillery Yamazaki, then going and just meeting master blenders and all the craftspeople,” Reeves explained. “I got to meet some of the artisans, Kabuki actors, calligraphists, being an outsider and getting to spend time with people and talk about their passion and their craft.”
Reeves can next be seen on the big screen when he reprises the role of John Wick for the spinoff Ballerina, coming to theaters next year. As for Coppola, she is also working on a Priscilla Presley biopic, dubbed Priscilla, which stars Cailee Spaeny as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s ex-wife.
