Keep pillows from turning yellow with 25p household essential

Pillows can quickly turn yellow due to a number of reasons including sweat, meaning they’re much more likely to go yellow in the summer.

1. Invest in some pillow protectors

Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, said: “If you are someone that is prone to sweating (or drooling) in your sleep then it might be a good idea to invest in some waterproof pillow protectors.

“These will ensure that any moisture is kept from seeping down into your pillow which, over time, could lead to a build-up of bacteria and even the growth of mould and mildew!

“Pillow protectors are very easily removed and can be washed regularly with the rest of your bedding.”

2. Baking soda to freshen the pillows

Baking soda is a great natural cleaning product, which can be used for a variety of jobs including odour-removal.

Ideally, pillows should be washed three to four times a year, ensuring to follow any manufacturer’s instructions on how to do so.

In between these washes, the pillow will likely need to be freshened up, especially during warm weather.

Jessica noted: “Bicarbonate of soda is great for absorbing moisture and reduces odours, which makes it perfect for sweaty pillows.

“All you need to do is sprinkle an even amount across your pillows and leave to sit for a couple of hours.

“After waiting, use a handheld hoover with a small nozzle to hoover your pillow clean, making sure to remove all bicarb residue.”

Baking soda can be picked up for as little as £1 a tub, and using it to clean pillows could last at least four times.

3. Hang them outside to aerate

Airing pillows outside is a great way to dry up any moisture which can also help to reduce bad odours.

The sun’s UV rays can actually help to reduce bacteria which is great, as a sweat-covered pillow can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

What’s more, the sun can also help to bleach fabrics, helping to make whites whiter.

4. Wash your pillowcases each week

The expert explained: “Whilst your pillows only need washing about twice a year, your pillow covers should be washed as much as once a week.

“Pillow covers typically take the brunt of most sweat or dirt and therefore can start to look dirty and get a little bit smelly.

“Keeping on top of cleaning them will not only keep your pillows looking and smelling fresh but can also prolong the life of your pillows.”
