NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced yesterday that the association will be announcing its punishment for Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant for his off-the-court behavior after the NBA Finals. ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins believes the Grizzlies should get ahead of it.
On Friday’s edition of First Take, Perkins made the case that Morant should try to get away from the city of Memphis and join a different organization. He said that Memphis is just not the right place to be in when trying to improve outside of basketball and that a trade might be better for Morant’s own well-being.
“If another incident like this happens… I’m ready to say right now that I think Ja Morant, it might be best for him to actually get out of Memphis and go to a different organization for his own well-being,” Perkins said.
Fans quickly took to the comments to point out that Memphis as a city shouldn’t bear the weight of Morant’s problems since hundreds of other players have gone there without having similar problems:

“Ja’s location is not the problem; he can make the same choices and decisions regardless of where he is,” one user replied.
“Why is it Memphis’s fault??? Plenty of players play in Memphis with no issues,” wrote another.
“A lot of what Perk said it’s true… Being in Memphis isn’t the main problem but it is part of it. If Ja was drafted to Utah, San Antonio, Denver or even Phoenix, I feel most of the sh- he’s doing wouldn’t be happening,” a third wrote.
Regardless, it’s hard to imagine Memphis trading the first player to make them nationally relevant since Pao Gasol.
But everything might be on the table depending on what the NBA’s punishment is.
