Kerala Blasters, who lost out in the knockout stages of ISL last month after finishing fifth in the league stages, started their campaign with a 3-1 win over I-League champions RoundGlass Punjab. The game saw Dimitrios Diamantakos, Nishu Kumar and Rahul KP score for the side with home fans backing them at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode.
Kerala Blasters lead the four-team Group A with the win while Bengaluru FC and Sreenidi are tied on a point each and are in the second and third spots. RoundGlass couldn’t open their account and are at the bottom. Only one team from the group will progress to the semifinals.
KBFC have made their ambitions clear about the competition as they also fielded their regular side for the game as the likes of Sahal Abdul Samad, and Saurav Mandal also featured in the game apart from the goal scorers.
Sreenidi Deccan, who conceded I-League after a drop in form towards the end of the season, put on a spirited display to hold ISL runners-up to a 1-1 draw. Afghan international Faysal Shayeste scored the equaliser 12 minutes after the Sunil Chhetri-led side took the lead. It was an even affair as both sides created multiple chances to kill the game.
Sreenidi Deccan can also take pride in putting up a credible show against a tough outfit as Bengaluru FC line-up also consisted of the likes of Roy Krishna, Gurpreet Singh, Sandesh Jhingan, Javi Hernandez, Prabir Das among big faces.
