The Phoenix Suns introduced star acquisition Kevin Durant in a press conference Thursday afternoon. While getting welcomed by his new team, Durant reflected on his Brooklyn Nets tenure.
While the Nets’ superteam didn’t meet lofty expectations, Durant still expressed fondness for his time with the organization.
“I built a family over there,” Durant said (via SNY’s Nets Videos). “They’re always going to be a part of my journey. We didn’t accomplish what we wanted to accomplish in terms of winning a championship … but I enjoyed the grind.”
Durant said it “just didn’t work out” because he, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden hardly saw the floor together.
“We just didn’t get on the court enough,” he said. “It was amazing basketball for 17 games, though.”
The 13-time All-Star conceded that Irving’s trade request was “tough to stomach” because he thought the team was finally building momentum. Yet he thinks everyone “tried their hardest” despite all the drama and media circus.
“I love those guys,” Durant said of his former Nets teammates. “I get emotional talking about it because that was a special four years of my career, coming off an Achilles. They helped me through a lot.”
Durant said it was “terrible” how things ended, but he believes the team has a bright future.
Brooklyn sent Durant to Phoenix alongside T.J. Warren for Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder (quickly flipped to the Milwaukee Bucks), and four unprotected first-round picks. The 34-year-old has yet to make his Suns debut as he recovers from a knee injury.
