Pre-pandemic in 2019, the average car was driven 7,400 miles a year, and with many returning to a “normal way of life”, they could see their mileage increase. The average diesel car in the UK gets 43 miles per gallon (MPG), while the average petrol car gets 36 MPG.
Based on July 2021 prices, someone driving an average petrol car those 7,400 miles would pay £1,010, while someone driving a diesel would pay £863.
At the end of July 2022 those same miles in the same car would cost £1,413 for a petrol driver and £1,242 for a diesel driver – a rise of £403 or £378.
While prices have continued to drop since then, smaller changes would represent a dramatic change in the amount of fuel they use.
The latest data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that leaded petrol prices are expected to continue to fall, with drivers seeing average prices of around 167.22p per litre.

Even the smallest items can boost the efficiency of the vehicle, meaning drivers will save money on fuel costs, which will begin to add up over the course of a year.
Larger items will obviously have a larger impact on the fuel economy of the vehicle.
The most common items include bicycles and bike racks, roof boxes, and in some cases, ladders.
Mr Brooker concluded, saying: “Are these tips going to wipe off the price increases for fuel, second-hand cars, and convenient driving tests?
“Not fully, no – but it’s a start. And with costs going up like they are, any savings you can find are key.”
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says for every 45kg (100 pounds) removed from a vehicle, the fuel economy is increased by one to two percent.
While this will naturally have more of an impact on larger vehicles when compared to a smaller hatchback, the benefits are available for all.
A large, blunt roof-top cargo box, for example, can reduce fuel economy by around two percent to eight percent in city driving.
On motorways, this can increase to savings of between six percent and 17 percent.
