According to Transport Canada, on some models, there is a defect in the airbag control unit that could cause the airbag warning light to appear, at which time the airbag may not properly inflate in a crash. Further, the NHTSA in the U.S. has released a document citing the issue in more detail: if the cover of the airbag control unit comes into contact with a memory chip on the circuit board, it could potentially damage it, thus causing the airbags to deactivate. No injuries have been reported.
The affected models include:
- 2017, 2018 Kia Forte
- 2017, 2018 Kia Forte Koup
- 2017, 2018, 2019 Kia Sedona
- 2017, 2018, 2019 Kia Soul
- 2017, 2018, 2019 Kia Soul EV
Hyundai and Kia will be notifying affected owners by mail, and then further instructing owners to take the vehicle to a dealer to update the airbag unit control software, or replace the unit, if required.
