Kieron Pollard says he and his West Indies team-mates are ‘hurting’ after the defending champions were knocked out of the T20 World Cup.
The Windies’ fate was confirmed on Thursday after they suffered a 20-run defeat to already-eliminated Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.
Sri Lanka posted an impressive 189-3 as Charith Asalanka smashed 68 from 41 balls and Pathum Nissanka made 51.
West Indies slipped to 47-3 in reply and, while Shimron Hetmyer impressed with an unbeaten 81 from 54 balls, Pollard’s side fell short as their reign as T20 World Cup champions was ended.
The holders were bowled out for 55 in their opening fixture against England and suffered another emphatic defeat at the hands of South Africa in their second game.
West Indies kept their play-off hopes alive with a tense victory over Bangladesh but had to beat Sri Lanka to stay in contention and failed to do so.
‘We were below par. In a match like this you don’t want to see those mistakes,’ Pollard said.
‘For us it has been disappointing. We’re not going to hide from that fact, I’m not going to hide from it.
‘We can do better. I’m sure all the guys in that dressing room are hurting, especially from a batting perspective.’
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, meanwhile, insisted he was ‘really happy’ with his team’s victory over West Indies.
‘It is a very good victory. Our youngsters have been working hard to get a win and I am really happy,’ he said.
‘I knew Nissanka and Asalanka have had potential for a long time and they’ve worked hard to get here. They have got a long career ahead of them and they’ll have a special place in any team.
‘Hasaranga is a gem and a superstar in the making. He is just starting off his career and we have to protect him. He is a real prospect in world cricket.’
