A convicted illegal immigrant killer living a new life in Belmont has been caught after 27 years on the run and is heading back to Colombia in handcuffs.

The FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the arrest of William Hernando Usma Acosta, 61, on Wednesday. He was convicted in absentia in Colombia for the 1994 shooting death of his wife and the attempted murder of his daughter.

The feds say his daughter attempted to break up a fight between her parents when the enraged dad turned on both of them. He had remarried and was living with his new wife and child in Belmont.

“Today’s arrest has ensured that this dangerous and convicted killer will face justice for his crimes,” said Todd Lyons, head of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston.

“Acosta will no longer pose a threat to the residents of the Commonwealth thanks to the tireless efforts of an outstanding team of law enforcement professionals in both the United States and Colombia,” Lyons added.

Acosta had been living in Belmont under the alias Carlos Alberto Rendon, according to the FBI. A phone number for him in Belmont was said to be “a wrong number” by the person who picked up the call from the Herald Wednesday night.

Acosta arrived in the U.S. illegally in 1995 after crossing the Mexican border. In 1998, he married an American citizen and obtained lawful, permanent resident status while living in Somerville, the FBI added.

He was traced to Belmont, the feds said, when he sent in an application for naturalization and his fingerprints revealed his true identity.
