Kim Cattrall to Return as Samantha for And Just Like That… Cameo

After it had seemingly been made clear from everyone involved that Kim Cattrall would not be returning as Samantha in the Sex and the City revival series, And Just Like That…, word is that it will be happening after all in the show’s upcoming second season. Variety reports that Cattrall will return for a voice cameo in the season 2, though it will be brief, as it’s limited to one scene. Getting the cameo to happen also didn’t mean that Cattrall reunited with her former co-stars, as she is said to have shot her dialogue in March without showrunner Michael Patrick King or any of the show’s lead stars present.

Per the report, the cameo is not intended to set up a bigger role for Samantha in a potential third season of the show. It would seem that it’s more to serve as a fun nod to the original series, as even though Cattrall had previously declined returning as Samantha in a starring capacity, the character was still alluded to in the first season. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) could be seen speaking with Samantha on the phone, though viewers couldn’t hear the voice on the other end of the line. An actual voice cameo in season 2 isn’t quite the same as getting Cattrall there in person for a physical reunion with her co-stars, but perhaps that could be the next step if season 3 comes to be.

The news comes as a surprise given how Cattrall and Parker had both said that a return would never happen. Last year, Parker told Variety that the tumultuous history between her and her former co-star made it extremely unlikely that Cattrall would come back, though she noted how the plan was still to keep Samantha around as a character, even off-screen, given how important she was to Sex and the City.

“I don’t think I would [want Cattrall to return], because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared,” Parker explained. “Samantha’s not gone. Samantha’s present, and I think was handled with such respect and elegance. She wasn’t villainized. She was a human being who had feelings about a relationship, so I think we found a way to address it which was necessary and important for people that loved her.”

In a separate interview, Cattrall had also told the outlet last year, “It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough. I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear.”

Kim Cattrall Will Join And Just Like That…

It’s not clear how exactly the tensions were smoothed over enough to make the cameo happen. In any case, fans can expect to hear the real Samantha in the seconds eason of And Just Like That…, and if that’s well received, then maybe, just maybe, Cattrall would be up for coming back in person in a third season.
