“Christian Bale can do it for a movie role and that is acceptable.”
Kim Kardashian addressed criticism of the rapid weight loss she underwent to be able to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s “Birthday” dress at the Met Gala.
As the dress could not be altered, Kim said she lost 16 pounds in 21 days — explaining that she “would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein.”
However, Kim’s remarks sparked intense criticism for perpetuating harmful diet rhetoric and dangerous weight loss goals. “Losing 16 pounds in 21 days is technically possible, but only through extreme and VERY unhealthy measures such as starvation or semi-starvation,” one dietitian told BuzzFeed. “It perpetuates the narrative that you shouldn’t wear clothes at your current size and that instead you should be changing your body.”
Speaking to the New York Times, Kim defended her weight loss. “To me it was like, ‘OK, Christian Bale can do it for a movie role and that is acceptable,'” she began.
“Even Renée Zellweger gained weight for a role. It’s all the same to me. I wasn’t saying, ‘Hey everyone, why don’t you go lose this weight in a short period of time?’”
“I didn’t do anything unhealthy,” she said.
When asked what would have happened if she was unable to lose the weight, Kim replied, “I just simply couldn’t have gone, which wouldn’t have mattered. It was just important to me to reach that goal.”
