Kim Kardashian’s latest ‘makeup-free’ selfie is sparking a debate about filters

Kim Kardashian, queen of contouring, is being praised for her latest “unfiltered selfie.” Let’s talk about it.

On March 6, the 42-year-old reality TV star shared a makeup-free-ish selfie straight from the dentist’s chair, disposable pink bib and all. Fans of the Skims founder were quick to flood her comments with the usual jokes, adoration, and emoji, but many also began to argue over her use of filters—or lack thereof.

“Yes an unfiltered selfie!!!” one fan responded to the pic, while another wrote, “Nice to see Kim’s skin without makeup or a filter.”

However, many were quick to suggest that even a more natural-appearing Kardashian selfie is likely still tweaked before being added to the ’gram. “See!!! Shut up all those haters she’s unfiltered unedited and still the most beautiful of all time,” one fan wrote. Another user replied to that comment directly, writing, “I love Kim and she’s beautiful but this is still edited.” 

Here are two things that are true: 

1. Women deserve to post a selfie without being bombarded with comments and questions about filters, fillers, Botox, and natural signs of ageing. 
2. There’s nothing wrong with using filters, fillers, and/or Botox, nor is there anything wrong with choosing to go without. 

Here’s one more thing that’s true: Kim Kardashian and her family have directly contributed to our culture’s warped perspectives on body image and ageing while denying the use of all of the above.

Back in September 2022, Kardashian denied ever getting a single grey hair despite the fact that there is actual footage of her stylist asking for permission to pluck one from her skull. In August 2022, she told Allure that she’s never had any work done to her face other than “a little bit of Botox.” She claimed she’s never even had eyelash extensions. 

“No. I’ve never had eyelash extensions,” she swore. “I’ve never done anything. I have a drop of mascara on today. I’ve never filled my cheeks. I’ve never filled my lips.” All this coming from the same woman who also said she’d probably “eat poop” if someone told her it would make her look younger. 

So what’s my point? Filter or no filter, Kim Kardashian is a beautiful woman. She’s also a billionaire business owner who wants you to believe her flawless skin, face, and body are all attainable through the right combination of SKKN by Kim skin care products, KKW Beauty mascara, and Skims shapewear.
