Experts at Double Dutch commented on the drinks that may be served at King Charles’s Coronation and revealed that one beverage could be chosen to honour the late Queen Elizabeth. The experts commented that gin is likely to be included in the Coronation’s menu as it is “a great summer drink” and “super refreshing” when paired with the right mixers. “Longer serves are a great way to quench guests’ thirst after a long day of formalities,” they explained.
It is believed gin used to be one of Queen Elizabeth’s favourite drinks, as her former chef Darren McGrady once said: “We served Pimm’s a lot at Buckingham Palace in the summer at garden parties and things, and it’s no secret that the Queen is a lover of gin – and it’s a gin-based drink. With a splash of lemonade in there, it’s a super-refreshing drink.”
Experts at Double Dutch explained that gin is “a deliciously light spirit” and “we think the late Queen would love a classic G&T or a Tom Collins paired with the Cucumber and Watermelon Mixer for a refreshing twist,” the experts commented.
If the beverage was served at the Coronation reception, it would be “a lovely nod to what was the Queen’s favourite – cucumber sandwiches,” said co-founder of Double Dutch Joyce & Raissa de Haas.
The former royal chef revealed how the late Queen liked her Pimm’s: “Forget just a slice of lemon – there are seven different things! It’s almost a fruit salad. Sliced oranges, lemons, cherries (stones removed of course) strawberries, cucumber, mint and borage.

“That’s one part Pimm’s and two or three parts lemonade. Some members of the Royal Family measured it the other way round and I’m not saying who!” Darren McGrady claimed on his YouTube channel.
Experts at Double Dutch shared two gin recipes featuring the Queen’s favourite ingredient, cucumber.

King Charles’s preferred alcoholic drinks are said to be martinis and whisky, which could also be served at the Coronation.
The experts opined: “Whisky Highballs are a great drink for the Coronation and highballs are up and coming in popularity for 2023. They are a fun and modern way to drink whisky, paired with ginger ale, and are long and refreshing for a (hopefully) hot bank holiday weekend.
“This would be a perfect service for the Coronation as a refreshing crowd pleaser and is our favourite way to drink whisky”, said Raissa de Haas.
A drinks expert at online drinks retailer The Bottle Club, Chandan Bathia, commented on King Charles’ favourite tipple saying: “The King is particularly partial to Scotch whisky as one of his favourite drinks. In fact, many aren’t aware the King’s estate actually brews and sells its own brand of whisky and other spirits. A Laphroaig 15-year-old scotch is reported to be the new King’s favourite drink.
“When opting for something a little lighter and more refreshing, King Charles is often known to enjoy a martini. As shown on the 2022 Channel 4 documentary, The Real Windsors: The Outspoken Heir, the King was said to enjoy a martini every night before dinner, during his travels to Transylvania.
“Count Tibor Kalnoky, Charles’ friend, who featured in the documentary, even revealed to Channel 4 that the King brought his own glass to drink his martini from each night. It is unknown whether the King will be keeping up with this tradition, and plans to bring his own martini glass to his Coronation celebrations in May.”
