With two required from the last delivery against an in-form Arshdeep Singh, Rinku hit a winning boundary and guided KKR to a famous win over Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday (May 8).
The left-handed India uncapped player scored 21* off 10 balls and showed nerves of steel once again despite losing dangerous-looking Andre Russell on the previous delivery.
With 6 runs required from the final over, the duo of Russell and Rinku held their nerves to finish the game in front of a hysteric Kolkata crowd. Russell – who had been struggling to find his form – also announced his arrival to form at an opportune time.
The big-hitting T20 freelancer from Jamaica smashed a 23-ball 42 at a strike rate of 182.61. His knock was laced with three sixes and as many fours. All three sixes in Russell’s innings came in the 19th over bowled by Sam Curran and the game shifted in KKR’s favour.
Earlier in the innings, skipper Nitish Rana led his team from the front and scored a half-century (51 off 38 balls) to keep his team in the hunt in the run chase of 180 on a tricky Kolkata pitch.
Rinku Singh finishes it off in style for KKR
Once Rana was dismissed, Andre Russell (42) and Rinku Singh (21*) played some fine strokes at the back end to help KKR beat PBKS by five wickets in a last-ball IPL thriller.
Russell played a pivotal role in the game to bring his team closer to the target and then Rinku finished it off with a four off the last ball of the innings to signal KKR’s victory, which was a big morale booster for the two-time IPL champions.
While reacting to his knock, Rinku – who has become a household name with his pyrotechnics in IPL 2023 – said he wasn’t thinking too much about the last delivery and was looking to play to the merit.
“I didn’t think about the last ball. Even when I hit those five sixes, I hadn’t thought much. I was playing on the merit of the ball.
“I had the belief in me that I could finish the game. I have got used to it, sometimes I bat at 5, sometimes at 6 or 7, I practice that way. There is no particular way I like to celebrate,” Rinku said after steering KKR to yet another win.
Twitter was flooded with posts on Rinku Singh and his growing stature in the ongoing IPL 2023 edition. Here’s how experts, as well as fans, reacted to Rinku’s knock and KKR’s win:

Rinku does it again, and Kolkata are still in this tournament. He’s turning out to be a bankable finisher for the Knight Riders this season with a s150+ strike rate. Brilliant stuff.#IPL2023 #KKRvPBKS

Long but satisfying day. There is something very endearing about Rinku Singh and his relationship with Nitish Rana.
