Jurgen Klopp has been suspended from the touchline for Liverpool’s Premier League match against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Liverpool manager has been punished for his comments about referee Paul Tierney in the aftermath of his side’s 4-3 win over Tottenham at Anfield on April 30.

The Liverpool manager has also been fined £75,000, while an additional one-game touchline ban is suspended until the end of next season, providing that he does not reoffend.

Klopp was initially asked about the yellow card he received from Tierney after he celebrated in the face of fourth official John Brooks following Diogo Jota’s injury-time winner against Spurs.

‘We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what this man has against us, he has said there is no problems but that cannot be true,’ Klopp said.

‘How he looks at me, I don’t understand it. But again? He was reffing against Tottenham [in 2021] where Harry Kane should have got a red card. And I love this player, crazy player and I don’t want him to get a red card, but he should.

‘And it’s Mr Tierney. It’s really tricky and hard to understand.’

An independent commission concluded that Klopp was guilty of improper conduct as his comments implied bias, questioned the integrity of the referee, were personal, offensive, and brought the game into disrepute.

Klopp is due to return to the dugout for Liverpool’s final game of the Premier League season away to Southampton on May 28.
