Liverpool’s turbo-charged title challenge was given a fresh dose of momentum on Saturday at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A late push from the Reds eventually yielded a 1-0 win, with substitute Divock Origi netting deep into stoppage time after he latched onto a cross from Mohamed Salah.

The victory temporarily put Jurgen Klopp’s side top of the pile in the Premier League after Chelsea slipped to a 3-2 defeat at West Ham United earlier in the day.

Manchester City’s win at Watford put them back in the driving seat later on Saturday, although given the nature of the win at Molineux, no set of fans will be feeling better than the travelling Reds.

Klopp’s wild celebrations

It’s been a campaign of memorable away days for Liverpool this season, having won 5-0 at Manchester United and 4-1 at Everton.

But none will feel as significant as the victory at Wolves.

At Molineux, Liverpool came up against one of the most dogged opponents they’ve faced this season and a team who did so much right to combat their strengths, unlike their aforementioned rivals.

Nevertheless, the Reds were able to find a way through and as Andy Dunn reported, Klopp was delighted at full time.

Origi has his say

Although Origi has fallen down the pecking order in recent years, the Belgian has been vital to Liverpool’s success in their latest successes.

The forward has chipped in with a number of crucial goals under Klopp and his most recent could prove to be decisive in what is likely to be a tight title race between Liverpool, City and Chelsea.

After the game, the Liverpool striker gave his thoughts on the game.

“We fought a lot and it was a difficult game against a strong team offensively and defensively,” he said. “We have the three points which is important to keep the momentum going.”

Konate surprise at Ronaldo

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has admitted his “surprise” at facing Cristiano Ronaldo this season.

Konate was handed a shock start when the Reds hammered Manchester United 5-0 in October. The former RB Leipzig man did a stellar job keeping Ronaldo quiet alongside his team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking about that game, Konate said he wasn’t daunted by the challenge.

“I was surprised because he’s one of the best players in the world, but he’s only human like me,” he said. “He has two arms and two legs. I had to be focused on my game with the team and it was good, it was ok.”
