Derrick Rose has spent the last two and a half seasons with the New York Knicks, but he’s seen his role with the team diminish over that time. Rose began as a veteran bench option, but was used very sparingly this season, appearing in only 27 games with no starts.
The former MVP is 34 and appears to be reaching the end stages of his career, and the Knicks aren’t featuring him in their future plans.
Knicks declining Derrick Rose’s team option suggests that they don’t have anything on the front burner trade-wise. Rose’s 16M expiring deal would have been valuable trade chip. Transaction will give Knicks access to the $12.2M exception in free agency. Newsday first reported.

According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Knicks will decline Rose’s team option for the 2023-24 season. He’ll be a free agent, able to sign with any team in the league.
Rose was due to make $16 million next season, and the Knicks deciding to decline his option seems to indicate that they were unable to find a trade partner to get something in return for his expiring contract.
By declining his option, the Knicks will be able to use $12.2 million of the money due to go to Rose as an exception in next month’s free agency.
Rose could choose to return to his hometown Chicago Bulls next season, the team that drafted him and where he had the best years of his career.
He likely wouldn’t play often, but he would have the opportunity to take a Udonis Haslem-level role with the team.
