Koenigsegg Gemera gets 2,300-hp hybrid V8 option

It’s apparently a family-friendly megacar

The Koenigsegg Gemera first made headlines when it was announced in March 2020 as the world’s first four-seater megacar. That apparently was not enough for Christian von Koenigsegg, company founder and CEO. Now, we have the final production spec of the Gemera and — get this — it can be optioned with an all-conquering 2,300 horsepower hybrid V8 powertrain. That’s almost 700 hp more than the 300-mph Bugatti Chiron Super Sport!

The Gemera was initially planned with a sole powertrain option. The concept car featured a 600 hp twin-turbo 2.0-litre three-cylinder engine, humorously dubbed the Tiny Friendly Giant (TFG). The combustion engine was paired with three electric motors for a combined output of 1,700 hp.

Now, with the production-spec Gemera, what Koenigsegg has done is swap out the three e-motors in favour of a new single electric motor. The Raxial Flux electric motor (a cross between radial and axial) is an ingenious creation called Dark Matter. It weighs a scant 86 lbs (39 kg) but still cranks out a staggering 800 hp and 922 lb-ft of torque. Combined with the Gemera’s TFG engine, the megacar puts out 1,400 hp and 1,364 lb-ft of torque.

Those numbers make the Gemera one heck of a bonkers high-performance machine. However, Koenigsegg’s V8 option dials up the Gemera’s insanity to ‘infinity and beyond.’ The 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 makes a heady 1,500 hp which then combines with the Dark Matter e-motor for a scarcely believable 2,300 hp and 2,028 lb-ft of torque on E85 fuel.

According to Christian von Koenigsegg, those numbers put the Gemera in a class of its own. “The Gemera HV8 is not only the most powerful and extreme production car on planet Earth with an astonishing 1.11 hp/kg, but it is also the most practical and user-friendly sports car ever created,” he said.

The Gemera gets a rejigged version of the nine-speed Light Speed Transmission (LST) developed for the Koenigsegg Jesko. Underscoring its designation as a family car, the Gemera also boasts 200 litres of storage space, Apple CarPlay connectivity and even special mounts for child seats.

The V8 hybrid powertrain upgrade for the Gemera doesn’t come cheap — no surprises there. It is listed as a $400,000 option on the carmaker’s website. The Koenigsegg Gemera is set to go into production at the end of 2024, with the first customer deliveries scheduled for early 2025.
