A day after losing his spot atop the Supercars championship standings and labouring to a 19th-placed finish, Brodie Kostecki has bounced back by securing provisional pole for the second of two races in Townsville.
Kostecki’s 1:12.838 lap on Sunday moring bettered Cam Waters and Chaz Mostert in an intense first qualifying that saw two-time defending Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen lock up and leave the track on his flying lap.
Less than a week after winning his first-ever NASCAR race in Chicago, Red Bull Ampol Racing’s van Gisbergen will start at the back of the grid in his 500th career race.
His teammate Broc Feeney, the second-placed finisher on Saturday, also missed the shootout and will start 13th.
David Reynolds qualified for the top-10 shootout for consecutive days as did Jack Le Brocq, while Saturday’s race winner Will Brown snuck in by the skin of his teeth after spending most of qualifying in the garage while his team fixed a steering issue.
Brown had one lap to make the shootout and snuck in by a hundredth of a second.
Shell V-Power’s Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale also both cracked the top 10.
Sunday’s shootout begins at 12.00pm (AEST) before the second 250km race at Reid Park at 2.40pm.
