Kyren Wilson was not making excuses after a 13-2 demolition at the hands of John Higgins at the Crucible, saying it was a frustrating and disappointing match.
Higgins was brilliant, opening up an 8-0 lead in the morning session and then securing the huge win without need to return for Monday’s third stanza.
Wilson could do nothing to stop the barrage from the Wizard of Wishaw, although damaging his cue between sessions didn’t help.
While signing autographs outside the Crucible he dropped his case and dislodged a weight in the butt of the cue, although he insisted that was not why he lost the match.
‘I’m very disappointed with that, it’s not easy to take, losing with a session to spare,’ Wilson told Eurosport. ‘It’s not in my nature to let that happen, but it just ran away from me. I felt like anything that could have gone wrong, went wrong.
‘John showed the class act that he is, he just kept turning the screw, he gave me nothing.’
On his cue issue, he explained: ‘That’s not the reason I lost. After the first session I always like to spend time with the fans, there were lots of fans outside that wanted autographs and pictures, unfortunately I dropped my cue trying to sign one of the books.
‘I think one of the weights are loose, so it’s just the fiddly little nipping shots that were tough, but playing anything with power were fine, so no excuse there.
‘It’s just frustrating. I feel like I’m so close all of the time, I’m always knocking on the door, I don’t think it’ll be long until you see me doing that to these great players. But while they’re still around I need to find a way of beating them. That’s the difference.’
Wilson had a memorable opening match at the Crucible, beating Ryan Day and making a 147 along the way.
Higgins was on a maximum in the final frame and the Warrior admits that he wasn’t thrilled about the idea of the Scot costing him half of the £55,000 winnings as well as the match.
‘I just said, “sod off mate.” I’m always delighted for people when they do well, but I’m not going to lie I was willing him to miss. If he’d took that off me as well I’d have been gutted.’
Higgins revealed what he said to Wilson after the match: ‘I said, I couldn’t do that to you, Kyren. That would have been really bad.’
Wilson knows how good Higgins was, watching him make four big centuries and four more half-centuries, and reckons it could be a fifth world title for him this year.
‘If he keeps playing like that then he’s got every chance of winning it this year, so good luck to him,’ said Wilson.
