Like many in the NBA community, the loss of Kobe Bryant still stings three years later.
On Tuesday, SLAM posted an old video of Bryant and a young Kyrie Irving playfully trash-talking each other at a U.S. basketball practice. Irving responded to the Twitter post with a message commemorating the late legend.
“Love you for life Bean,” Irving wrote. Wish you were still here.”

In the video clip, Irving warned Bryant to guard him closely before telling the recorder that the Lakers star “thinks he’s talking to a high school kid.”
“You just came out of high school, kid!” Bryant shouted back.
When Irving responded that he played in college, unlike Bryant, Kobe retorted that he “played two games in college.” Injuries limited Irving to 11 games at Duke before the Cleveland Cavaliers made him the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.
Irving considered Bryant a mentor and close friend. After winning the 2016 NBA Finals, Irving said he FaceTimed Bryant to celebrate his first title.
“Realizing how hard it is just to win one, my respect for him is already high, but it went to another level knowing that he’s got five of them,” Irving said. “I’m trying to get a second one.”
The star point guard was emotional during his first game after Bryant’s tragic death in January 2020.
“His seeds that he’s planted in all of us will continue to grow,” Irving said in a post-game interview. “His legacy’s going to live on forever.”
