Shortly after the NBA’s free-agency period opened, Kyrie Irving signed a three-year, $126 million contract to remain with the Dallas Mavericks. It was a noteworthy deal for more than one reason.
His stepmother, Shetellia Riley Irving, represents Irving. When reporting the signing, The Athletic’s Shams Charania noted that Riley Irving is the first Black woman to negotiate and complete an NBA deal. Irving retweeted the proclamation to his timeline.

Riley Irving was believed to become the first Black woman to represent an NBA player when the All-Star point guard hired her last year. He was previously a client of Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports before aligning with the former Vice President of Ad Sales at Black Entertainment Television.
After finalizing his return to Dallas, Irving gave props to Riley Irving and his father.
“Big Shoutout to my agent Shetellia Riley Irving
and my business manager Drederick Irving,
who did a great job throughout the whole entire process,” Irving wrote Friday night on Twitter.
Per Bill Reiter of CBS Sports, Irving planned to meet with other teams. However, Riley Irving said they “decided that Dallas would be our place” early in the process. Only 15 players are set to make a higher salary than Irving’s $42 million next season.
