Tail O’ the Pup, a 1946 hot dog stand that is shaped like a hot dog, officially opens this week at its new home in West Hollywood.
The ribbon cutting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, with Hollywood hoopla, according to a news release, including searchlights and dignitaries. Beginning Thursday, hours will be noon-8 p.m. daily.
The refurbished Pup is at 8512 Santa Monica Blvd., which is said to be where the rock band the Doors recorded “L.A. Woman” in 1970. Its original location was about a mile away, near where the Beverly Center now stands on La Cienega Boulevard.
The 18-foot-long stand is an example of programmatic architecture, also called novelty architecture, which thrived in Southern California in the first half of the 20th century.
Over the years, it provided a photo op for movie stars and rockers, including Devo, The Stray Cats and the Go-Go’s.
The stand closed and was put into storage in 2005. It was saved by the Valley Relics Museum in Van Nuys and then acquired by the 1933 Group, which revives and runs historical properties such as the Idle Hour, a whiskey-barrel shaped bar in North Hollywood, and the Formosa Cafe, a 1920s Chinese restaurant.
Bobby Green, co-owner of the 1933 Group, fell in love with Tail O’ The Pup as a tourist before moving to Southern California.
“The really nice thing about Tail o’ the Pup is because there are such fond memories among people who grew up in LA, when I reach out to someone they almost get more excited about it than I am,” he said in a phone interview in November, when the revival project was announced.
Since then, the structure has been reinforced and repainted to match colors in historical photos, according to the news release.
The Pup had a soft opening July 8, but has been open for limited hours as its staff gets used to navigating the space.
Customers can order their food at the stand, the news release said, but because the space is so small the service takes place in an adjoining dining room with a kitchen and pick-up counter.
The menu features all-beef hot dogs priced $7.25-$8.95, plus burgers, fries, onion rings and shakes. Beverages include beer, wine and hard selzer.
The signature dog is called the 1946 Dog, which Green said would be prepared the way hot dogs were at Tail O’ The Pup back in the beginning.
“The dogs were split and grilled. They weren’t whole and steamed. The buns were grilled. So, more labor-intensive but a better quality product.”
