Crumble-topped coffee cake. Santa Fe scrambles. Hot cocoa with whipped cream and sprinkles.
Millie’s Kitchen, a homey Lafayette breakfast institution of 46 years, closed its doors this week at 1018 Oak Hill Road. Owner Eva Clement made the announcement in a note taped to the door of the cottage-style eatery on Oak Hill Road.
“To our valued Millie’s family,” the note read. “With great sadness, Millie’s has decided to retire. We have appreciated all of your patronage, friendship and loyalty over the years.” It was signed by at least eight staff members, including Leslie, Hannah, Gonzalo, Martin and Felipe.
They no doubt knew their customers by name as well. Over the decades, Millie’s was known as an iconic community spot for breakfast or brunch, a place where cops hung out, kids could buy a Tootsie pop for a dime and maybe even spot one of their favorite Oakland As ballplayers.
It will be remembered as much for its huge portions as for the Campolindo High School swimmers who gathered to carbo-load between their 5 a.m. workouts and the start of school.
According to Lamorinda Weekly, Clement worked at the restaurant for 14 years before buying it in 2014 from Millie Harris, the namesake chef and original owner. Clement’s note said to stay tuned for an announcement about the new ownership in January.
