Despite being in the industry for several years, Wadali Brothers, the now discontinued musical duo, have barely sung songs in Hindi films. While many singers don’t aspire to be playback singers, Lakhwinder Wadali, son of Puranchand Wadali states that his father never enjoyed recording himself.
“Papaji doesn’t usually record. I don’t know if he doesn’t like it or if he is happy in his space. He is too simple a man and glamour doesn’t appeal to him much. He is a little hesitant towards singing tracks but it’s very easy for him to sing live,” says Lakhwinder, who himself is a popular singer.
Having said that Wadali Brothers have been credited for a few songs including Rangrez (Tanu Weds Manu). “The songs seen in movies were recorded live,” Lakhwinder clarifies that his father has denied crooning for several iconic Hindi tracks.
“He was offered to sing for the track of Veer Zara, the part where both the lead actors met after years (Tere Liye, eventually Roop Kumar Rathod sang that bit). I used to attend calls for him back then, so I know. And the only reason he denied many such offers was because he did not want to record for a track. Even Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s track Bhar Do Jholi Meri was offered to him but he didn’t do that either. They even waited for months but he did not accept the offer,” Lakhwinder shares.
Calling his father his own “mauj ke malik”, Lakhwinder hopes that with the new year things will change, as he has now joined his father. “I am also doing a song with Salim- Sulaiman ji, the music has been made, the lyrics are by Kumar Sab We are trying to finish it up now and working on it,” he ends.
