The king of Lalbaug, popularly revered as the Lalbaugcha Raja, gives darshan to almost lakhs of devotees for 11 days during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. The Lord Ganpati’s idol, which has a whole different look and theme every year, is immersed in the Arabian Sea at Girgaon Chowpatty on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. After a hiatus of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year, Mumbaikars and folks travelling from across the sphere will once again witness the glory and powerful vibration of the Lalbaugcha Raja. Ganesh Chaturthi 2022 will be celebrated on August 31, Wednesday, which will be a large affair at the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal. This year’s events at the Lalbaugcha Raja Pandal will be observed without any Covid restrictions. In 2022, for the first time in history, the Pandal didn’t install Lord Ganpati’s idol, and in 2021, the Mandal made a four-ft idol in place of its usual 14-ft idols. People hold the faith that the idol of the God of wisdom is known to be ‘Navasacha Ganpati’, who is venerated as “one who fulfils all wishes”. The belief draws millions of pilgrims to the murti’s display area during the 10-day Vinayaka Chaturthi festival. The divine idol of Lalbaugcha Raja of the famous Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal was established in 1934 at Lalbaug Market by fishermen of the Koli community. A few days before the Ganesh Utsav, a holy sighting of the Lord Ganesha’s idol known as Mukh Darshan ceremony is organised, which is covered by national, local and regional channels. Two queues of people who wait for their turn to take the blessings of Lord Ganesha are known as Navsachi Line and the Mukh Darshanachi Line. Navsachi line is for people who want to fulfil their wishes, whereas Mukh Darshan is to behold the pious sight of the Ganesha idol without going onto the stage.
