A driver who let their toddler sit on the centre console of the car didn’t stop for police as they thought they had done “nothing wrong”.
Police stopped the vehicle today in Allerdale, Cumbria, and officers said the parent thought it was acceptable for their young child to sit on the centre console of the vehicle.
There was also another person in the car without their seatbelt on, and officers described a tire on the vehicle as being “as flat as a pancake”.
But officers say the car didn’t stop when signalled with the blue light, because they thought they had done “nothing wrong”.
Officers say the vehicle also had no MOT and no tax, Lancs Live reports.
A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “This parent believed it was acceptable to have their toddler sat on the centre console of the car, another with no seat belt. Did not not stop for the blue light as they had done “nothing wrong”.
“One tire flat as a pancake, no MOT and no tax.”
A child aged three or older can travel in a back seat without a child car seat and without a seat belt if the vehicle doesn’t have one.
In most cases, children under three must always be in a child car seat.
The rules are only different if:
- the child is in a taxi or minicab
- the child is in a minibus, coach or van
- the child is on an unexpected journey, for example an emergency
- there’s no room for another car seat
