Latest BLACK ADAM trailer teases the film’s big bad

It goes without saying that the future of the DCEU is in a bit of flux given recent developments and shakeups. While both Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have both shifted their original release dates, Black Adam, the latest big screen entry from Warner Bros. and DC Comics starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the anti-hero, is scheduled to hit theaters next month. Warner Bros. has released a second Black Adam trailer.

Once again set to a remix of Kanye and JAY-Z’s “Murder to Excellence,” the trailer features more footage of the the Justice Society including Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom-Smasher (Noah Centineo), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell).

Though the film’s place in relation to the broader DCEU has been debated, the appearance of Amanda Waller once again played by Viola Davis clearly shows it connects to the larger continuity.

The Black Adam trailer also offers our best glimpse yet at the film’s villain Sabbac. Fans may recall that the previously revealed Black Adam Funko figures gave us an early look.

As comic fans are well aware, before Billy Batson became the champion of Shazam, Adam was the Wizard’s original chosen hero in ancient Egypt before being corrupted by his awesome godlike powers. Whereas Billy Batson’s powers are derived from the ancient Greek gods and heroes, Adam’s come from ancient Egyptian gods which include – the stamina of Shu, the swiftness of Horus, the strength of Amon, the wisdom of Zehuti, the power of Aten, and the courage of Mehen.

Johnson has made it no secret that this has been a major passion project for him for years and it’s a role that he was born to play. Unsurprisingly, on the publishing side DC Comics is prepping fans and audiences with prelude one-shots that tie-in to the upcoming film, as well as a new Black Adam limited series from writer Christopher Priest and artist Rafa Sandoval.

Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who previously worked with Johnson on last summer’s Jungle Cruise, and from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani.

Black Adam is set to arrive in theaters on October 21, 2022.
