Manchester United’s opening offer for Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is set to fall well short of the Italians’ valuation of the midfielder.

Milinkovic-Savic, a target for Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese’s time at Old Trafford, has spent the last eight seasons in the Italian capital.

He is now minded to leave the club as, at the age of 27, he fears he’s entering a crucial phase of his career where it could be his last chance to get a dream move to the Premier League.

The Serbian is more of a box-to-box operator but he’s been identified as an alternative to Frenkie de Jong by United.

United have agreed a £63m deal to sign the Dutchman but he has not intention of leaving the Camp Nou and he is still owed £17m in deferred wages.

Barcelona are refusing to make that full payment and, to make matters worse, they’re requesting that De Jong takes another pay decrease if he wants to stay at the club.

United’s deal is now in major doubt, hence their interest in Milinkovic-Savic.

While the Red Devils will wait for as long as they can to sign De Jong, they have spoken to the Serbian’s team about a move to Old Trafford and they’re preparing a £42m bid for the midfielder.

However, the Daily Mail say that Lazio want closer to £60m for the Serbia international and they’ll hold out for their valuation.

Erik ten Hag wanted his transfer business to be completed for the start of the season but, with just over a week left until United take on Brighton on the opening weekend, he’s still targeting as many as three signings.

Cristiano Ronaldo reiterated his desire to leave the club in a meeting with Ten Hag on Tueday but United maintain he’s not for sale.
